DEPARTING SOON (2021)

Departing soon was commissioned for ArtHouses:LOCALwifi, an arts project that invited you to connect with a network of WIFI hotspots, hosted by people living in Whitley Bay. Each hotspot presented a different artwork that you could see by going to the location and viewing it on your phone from the street. Departing Soon was hosted by Sue on Albany Gardens.​

After days of thinking, I concluded that the only thing I really enjoy doing on my smartphone is looking at maps and train schedules. Starting from that, Departing Soon is an alternative route-planner that takes the viewer on a journey through the general media landscape of the present world. Through musings on the small, awkward screen of a hand-held device and the illusory depth of the worlds it houses, as well as travel anecdotes that all dip into the virtual, Departing Soon dives into the experiences and possibilities that are enacted at the nexus of the screen and the user.
